Five VFW 914 Members Recognized
for Volunteer Efforts

Five members of VFW Post 914 'Intrepid' of West Mifflin will be recognized t a volunteer appreciation dinner to be held June 11th at the Southwestern Veterans Center.

Lauded for their work with veterans will be post life members Dan Cunningham, Russ Emery, Jim Leerberg, Henry Lutz and Andy Yatsko.  Each was selected for volunteering more than 15 hours of service over the last 12 months to the approximately 235 fellow veterans who live at the area Veterans facility.

As past of the West Mifflin veterans' service organization's annual budget, members from VFW Post 914 'Intrepid' in West Mifflin provide food, refreshments and fun for patients in local VA medical centers.  Throughout the year, scores of patients are treated to pizza, cookies, milk, soda at the Southwestern Veterans Center on Highland Drive in Pittsburgh, as well as other VA facilities.

Post members often conduct bingo games for the residents.  Bingo game winners receive small cash awards that help them purchase luxury items at the hospital that might not otherwise be available to them.

VFW Post 914 'Intrepid' budgets nearly $1,500 each year to directly support the local VA patients through its visitation program.  Other benevolent works the post does includes purchasing food certificates for the widows of local veterans, buying telephone cards so those serving in Iraq and Afghanistan can call their loved ones, and financing scholarship and academic prizes for West Mifflin students.

To raise monies for these efforts, members of VFW 'Intrepid' will be selling Buddy Poppies at various retail establishments in West Mifflin during the Memorial Day weekend.  Citizens who want to sow their support for area soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who proudly honored our nation's uniforms can do so by purchasing poppies.
