West Mifflin Student Earns Third Place For VFW 914

West Mifflin Area High School Senior Samuel McClain has won third place laurels in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Voice of Democracy competition.  The members of V.F.W. Post 914 "Intrepid" endorsed the student as the unit's winner of their annual V.O.D. selection last year.

McClain's winning composition was based on the theme ""How I Demonstrate My Freedom".  His entry was sent on to V.F.W. District 29 for further consideration at the state and national levels.  By placing third at the higher level, McClain's essay has earned him a $100 savings bond from Post 914 'Intrepid,' a $200 check from District 29, Department of Pennsylvania V.F.W., a trophy and certificate.

McClain will be presented his awards at the WMAHS Convocation Ceremony May 18 at 7 p.m. by Post Commander Joseph Popovich, Post Founder and Past Commander Walter Kuczma, and Post Quartermaster Mike Mauer. Other school activities McClain has excelled in include Drum Major for the Titan Marching Band, jazz band, high school musical, National Honor Society, school yearbook and school newspaper, as well as school math and biology clubs.  He intends to further his education at Duquesne University with a major in education.
Created in 1947, the V.F.W.'s Voice of Democracy program annually provides more than $3 million in scholarships. Each Department's first-place winner receives an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., plus the opportunity to compete for national scholarships. The first-place national winner receives a $25,000 scholarship.

The 2004 winner of Post 914's competition, West Mifflin Area High School graduate Erin P. Graham, also won V.F.W. V.O.D. placement last year in District 29 with her essay, "Celebrating Our Veteran's Service."
