Members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 914 'Intrepid' were treated to free Spirit of America tickets during the Thursday Aug. 30 meeting at the Thompson Run Athletic Club in West Mifflin. In other post business, $100 was donated to help support the efforts of Rolling Thunder Chapter 4 Pennsylvania in assisting homeless and disabled veterans as well as Gold Star mothers.
Twenty tickets were handed out to VFW Post 914 membership for the Sept. 15 Spirit of America performance. The two-hour show combines traditional ceremonial drill and historical reenactments. Theatrical interpretations from the Revolutionary War to current operations feature a unique perspective of American history -- that of the citizen Soldier.
Also highlighting the show will be the Fife & Drum Corps, the U.S. Army Drill Team, and The Caisson Platoon. All are elite specialty units of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, known as The Old Guard. Performances by the U.S. Army's premier musical organization, The U.S. Army Band, known as "Pershing's Own, will also be featured.
In a unanimous vote, the post membership paid for the tickets of five area Gold Star mothers to attend a commemorative dinner Sept. 30 at the American Legion Post in Plum Borough. The West Mifflin VFW also funded two seats for members of the Southwestern Veterans' Center to attend a benefit dinner Dec. 6 at Cefalo's on Washington Avenue in Carnegie.
The Cefalo dinner for homeless and disabled veterans will feature appetizers, beverages and an autograph session with former professional football player and decorated Vietnam Veteran, Rocky Blier. |
