Three local veterans who served overseas during World War II joined ranks with Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 914 'Intrepid' at its monthly meeting Thursday, May 31. Enlisting in the veterans' service organization were Frank McIntosh of Overdale Drive, Homestead, and Glenn Smith and Robert Creely, both of West Mifflin.
A veteran of the Army Air Force in the Pacific, Smith was awarded the Air Medal for his actions in combat in the New Guinea area of operations. Both McIntosh and Creely earned their foreign service credentials while serving as soldiers in the United States Army.
The addition of the three men into West Mifflin VFW 914 'Intrepid' brings the post's active membership to 155. All on the rolls are veterans who served in a combat theater of operations from World War II to the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. There are no social members in the post. This past March, the post received recognition from the VFW National Commander for achieving over 100 percent in membership for the 2006-2007 year. In currently ranks fourth in its division for membership growth in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
In other post business, a $100 donation was made to assist the 72 players of the West Mifflin Bulldog Baseball Club and $150 voted to sponsor a racer in the Greater Pittsburgh Soap Box Derby. Last year, the car sponsored by VFW Post 914 finished second in the McKeesport stock division.
