Veterans Of Foreign Wars Post 914 'Intrepid' West Mifflin is pleased to announce the following winners of the annual Walter Kuczma Scholarship Award. Three West Mifflin Area High School graduating seniors will each receive a check to help them further their studies as well as a certificate from the post.
First place winner is Samantha Jo Popovich, whose 250-word essay helped earn her top laurels. Second place was Mike Hasson, while Alexandra Ermakov won third. The students were awarded prizes of $300, $200 and $100 respectively for their efforts. Each will be presented their awards at the 7 p.m. WMAHS Convocation Ceremony Wednesday May 23 by Post Commander Joseph Popovich, Post Founder and Past Commander Walter Kuczma, and Post Quartermaster Mike Mauer.
The annual scholarship award is open to all West Mifflin High School seniors who have had a family member serve honorably in the armed forces of the United States. Winning essays are selected by WMAHS faculty and staff. The annual scholarship is named after Walt Kuczma of West Mifflin, founder of V.F.W. Post 914 and a World War II veteran. Kuczma served on the famous aircraft carrier U.S.S. Intrepid when it was attacked by Japanese kamikazes in November 1944. |
