Veterans Of Foreign Wars Post 914 'Intrepid' West Mifflin is pleased to announce the following winners of the Walter Kuczma Scholarship Award.
Three West Mifflin Area High School graduating seniors will receive a check to help them further their studies and a certificate from the post to be presented at the West Mifflin High School auditorium.
First place winner is Daniel Zlokas, whose 250-word essay helped earn him top laurels. Second place was Courtney Vautier, while Christopher Caulfield won third. The students were awarded prizes of $300, $200 and $100 respectively for their efforts. Each will be presented their awards at the WMAHS Convocation Ceremony May 18 at 7 p.m. by Post Commander Joseph Popovich, Post Founder and Past Commander Walter Kuczma, and Post Quartermaster Mike Mauer.
The annual scholarship award is open to West Mifflin High School seniors who have had a family member serve in the armed forces of the United States.
The annual scholarship is named after Walt Kuczma of West Mifflin, founder of V.F.W. Post 914 and a World War II veteran. Kuczma served on the famous aircraft carrier U.S.S. Intrepid when it was attacked by Japanese kamikazes in November 1944.
