Kuczma Scholarship Winners Announced for 2005

Veterans Of Foreign Wars Post 914 'Intrepid' West Mifflin is pleased to announce the following winners of the Walter Kuczma Scholarship Award.  Three West Mifflin Area High School graduating seniors will receive a check to help them further their studies and a certificate from the post.

First place winner is Angela Hrizo, whose 250-word essay helped earn her top laurels. Second place was Lindsey Neil, while Stephanie Derrick won third.  The students were awarded prizes of $300, $200 and $100 respectively for their efforts.

The annual scholarship award is open to West Mifflin High School seniors who have had a family member serve in the armed forces of the United States.   This year's winners all had grandfathers who served in the United States Army.  To qualify for the scholarship awards, participants were required to write a brief essay following the theme  "How I feel about veterans?" "The small freedoms that many people take for granted each day could not be possible if it were not for our veterans," wrote Hrizo in her winning effort.  ""They protected these freedoms and maintained our safety while facing substantial amounts of danger."

The winners will receive their checks during a ceremony at 7 p.m. May 19th in the West Mifflin High School auditorium.

The annual scholarship is named after Walt Kuczma of West Mifflin, founder of V.F.W. Post 914 and a World War II veteran.  Kuczma served on the famous aircraft carrier U.S.S. Intrepid when it was attacked by Japanese kamikazes in November 1944.
