For the first time in over a decade, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 914 Intrepid in West Mifflin has a new commander.
Charles Krebs, Life Member and former head of Uhlman-Horne VFW Post 456, won the balloting March 27 at the Thompson Run Athletic Association. He replaces long-time commander Joe Popovich.
Under Popovich’s leadership, the membership of Post 914 has continuously grown and the organization has become more active in the community – especially with supporting local veterans and post widows. Last year, VFW 914 was recognized with a Membership Streamer Award from the VFW National Commander-in-Chief for exceeding recruiting goals. For his efforts in this and other outstanding service, Popovich was selected as a National-Aide-De-Camp in December 2006.
Other post officers voted in for the new term are Senior Vice Commander, Jake Bradich, Junior Vice Commander, Richard Fleischer, Commander Pro Tempore, Jack Marsh, Quartermaster, Michael Mauer, Adjutant, Joseph Coccaro, Trustees: Al Karel, two years, Henry Lutz, three years, James Leerberg, one year, Chaplain, Joe O’Hanlon Jr., Advocate General, Andy Yatsko, Surgeon General, Russ Emery, Officer of the Day, Dan Cunningham, Service Officer, Walt Kuczma and Guard, George Tesla.
In other post business, the membership prepared for its upcoming Buddy Poppy sale slated for the Memorial Day weekend. To raise the money for academic scholarships, community youth athletic programs, outreach programs to veterans’ hospitals and to send care packages and telephone cards to local troops serving overseas, VFW Intrepid annually sells Buddy Poppies during the Memorial Day weekend. As they have in years past, solid citizens can help show their support for area soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who proudly honor our nation's uniforms by again purchasing poppies. |
