VFW Post 914 Intrepid
Honored by National Commander-in-Chief

VFW Post 914 Intrepid Commander Joseph Popovich, left, helps post Past Commander Walter Kuczma display the membership streamer award from Commander-in-Chief Gary L. Kurpius.  The West Mifflin post was lauded for having one of the highest recruitment rates in Allegheny County.

Members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 914 Intrepid in West Mifflin can rightly walk a little taller this month after their March 29 meeting.  The post received recognition from the VFW National Commander for achieving over 100 percent in membership for the 2006-2007 year.

"Your Post can be justifiably proud of its officers and members who have contributed so much to the success of the programs and purposes of the Veterans of Foreign Wars," read the certificate delivered to the unit by Gary L. Kurpius, National Commander-in-Chief.  "Again, congratulations and thank you for all you do to keep our organization strong."

The post also welcomed two new West Mifflin members into its ranks at the monthly meeting.  Rami Nassar, an Army infantryman and Automated Logistics Specialist who served in the War on Terror, and Scott C. Havelka, a decorated Marine who won the Purple Heart while serving in Lebanon.
"It is great to see younger veterans taking more interest in the VFW and their community," said Joseph Popovich, Intrepid post commander.  "With more good members we are able to do more good things.  That's what our organization is all about."

In other post business, the membership received updates on its efforts in the 'Titans for Troops" campaign.  Over the past three months, the unit has teamed with the West Mifflin Area High School's Junior Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps and other students to help send approximately 100 care packages to troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.  "Our members have made a conscious effort over the last four years to use the post's energies as much as possible to help those local service
personnel who are fighting overseas," said Mike Mauer, Post 914 quartermaster.  "To see the younger members of the community involved shows veterans of all conflicts how much their sacrifices are appreciated."
