VFW Post 914 To Assist Vets With Gulf War Bonus

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 914 ‘Intrepid’ of West Mifflin are eager to assist qualified soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who can now apply for a service bonus under the Persian Gulf Conflict Veterans’ Benefit Program.  Nearly two years after being signed by Governor Edward Rendell, this benefit is finally a reality for those who served in Operation Desert Storm.

“My application is already off,” said Mike Mauer, Desert Storm veteran and quartermaster for VFW Post 914.  “We at the post are ready to help whoever else that may be able to receive this benefit.”

To rate a bonus, applicants must have been awarded the Southwest Asia Service Medal and been a legal resident of Pennsylvania at the time of active service from Aug. 2, 1990, to Aug. 31, 1991.  There is also a provision that allows for compensation to be paid to surviving relatives of deceased veterans.

Receiving a dishonorable discharge or renouncing citizenship of the United States may disqualify some applicants, said Mauer.
