Two West Mifflin Area High School students have been selected as this year's Veterans of Foreign Wars outstanding Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets. Each was recognized during the annual AFJROTC dinner ceremonies held at the Westwood Golf Course April 27.
Winning top honors were Cadet Master Sergeant Leo Agafonov and Cadet Staff Sergeant Kristi Murphy. Each received a certificate and medal from VFW Post 914 West Mifflin Intrepid Commander Joseph Popovich, Quartermaster Mike Mauer and Alfred A. Di Lembo, judge advocate, VFW Post 1810.
"These cadets exemplify the same ideals of Americanism through participation in AFJROTC that are held dear by the veterans in the VFW," said Popovich. "We are proud to honor two young people here who are named to be the best representatives of such an outstanding student organization."
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Award is presented annually to an outstanding cadet who attains a grade of "B" or better in AFJROTC with an overall average of "C" or better in all subjects from the previous semester. Other standards include showing a positive attitude towards AFJROTC, having an outstanding military bearing and conducting and demonstrating leadership potential.
Each cadet more than met the qualifications for the VFW's highest citation for an AFJROTC program. Cadet Master Sergeant Agafonov served as the Corps of Cadets logistics officer and was promoted to Master Sergeant during this school year. As part of his duties, he was responsible for over $100,000 in uniforms, books and computer equipment. He also was a member of the inspection and drill team.
Cadet Staff Sergeant Kristi Murphy was named commander of JROTC's Saber Team. Her efforts helped lead the squad to a second place trophy during regional competitions at North Allegheny High School this past March. She is also on the drum line of West Mifflin Area High School's Titan Band and a member of the Lady Titan's softball team. |
