C.M. Schwab Vocation School and graduated from Homestead High School on May 20, 1937 at
the Carnegie Library Auditorium. In grade school, he skipped from the first semester of
the first grade to the second semester in second grade because he did so well. He worked as a mechanic at W.F. Terrill's Garage in Homestead and then as a steel worker for Carnegie-Illinois Corporation until joining the US Army Air Corps. He and two childhood buddies enlisted on January 14, 1942. He was sent overseas and flew 202 missions until he was shot down over northern Italy. Was discharged honorably. Married at Chanute Field, IL to Erna J. BERQUIST on July 28,1945. They settled in Homestead, PA after the war. Was hired by the Union Railroad and moved to West Mifflin, PA in 1948 where they lived their days. Retired in April 1980. In 1993 he was diagnosed with small (oat cell) lung cancer. |
