HISTORY
OF OUR POST OFFICE:
Dravosburg had a
post office long before it became a borough. This is the brief official
history supplied by Post Master John Palcsey:
The first Post Office in Dravosburg, PA was located in the Richards
Hotel. The hotel was owned by H.C. Richards. On July 1, 1944
the Post Office moved to a new building location at 209 McClure Street and
City Delivery was started on August 1, 1944. The Post Office had two
delivery routes at that time. Francis A. Meehan was the Postmaster
of Dravosburg at this time.
The City
Delivery Routes were #1 Old Dravosburg (639 stops) and #2 Riverview and
Parcel Post (256 stops). Route #3 was started on September 14,
1944. The Dravosburg delivery area was expanded to some parts of
Mifflin Township in 1950. There were two walking routes and one
mounted route delivered until West Mifflin, PA got their own post office.

This short
history was done by Postmaster James Nicols in 1968...
In 1851, the Amity section of Mifflin Township
was laid out by J.C. Risher. The community leader's campaign for a
Post Office to be called "Amity" was rejected because there was
already a town of Amity near Washington County.
On March 20, 1862, John F. Dravo, a prominent
businessman, was named the first Postmaster of Dravosburgh; a post which
he held for five years.
On August 24, 1893, the Post Office named the
town of Dravosburgh in honor of the first Postmaster and changed the
spelling of the town by eliminating the "H" - Dravosburg.
The first Post Office in Dravosburg was located
in the Richards Hotel on McClure Street, below the railroad tracks.
The landmark building was later destroyed by fire in the mid 1960s.
On July 1, 1944, the Post Office was moved up the
street to 209 McClure Street and remained there until March 1, 1971.
The Post Office then moved to our present location on the bottom floor of
the Pierce Chiropractic Clinic Building at 209 Richland Avenue. |
